Do you visit for the spirituality, archaeology or mythology? Retrace the steps of ancient Sri Lankan Kings. The Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka is home to the island’s ancient civilizations and national parks perfect for birdwatching and wildlife. To visit is to make an extraordinary journey through centuries of rich living heritage and natural history.

Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is one of Asia’s top tourist destinations where history weaves its tapestry through time. Royal Kingdoms from the 3rd century BC are best explored on Ayu in the Wilds expert-led history walks to understand the ethno-anthropology of the island's ancient civilisations. Five, of the island’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located here including the spectacular Sigiriya Lion Rock - a fortress of a 5th century AD King and a retreat for Buddhist monks since the 3rd century BC. One of the awe inspiring sites is the 3rd century BC Anuradhapura – Sri Lanka’s First Royal Kingdom with over 1000 years of history, the sacred bo-tree and enormous stupas (temples called dagobas). Perhaps the most fascinating insights into Buddhist Art is in the cave temples of Dambulla that have continued to be a refuge for monks for centuries. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa -the Second Royal Kingdom offers insights into medevial artistry, architectural and engineering brilliance. The Cultural Triangle extends southwards to Kandy. Incredible world history happened during the reign of these kings, including the birth of Christ. Don’t miss out on the local cuisine - ancient irrigation tanks built by Kings feed great farming heartlands and this is where you will uncover the beautiful tapestry of life in rural Sri Lanka on authentic exchanges with local people. Wake up early for a privately guided summit-walk to Mihintale Rock, where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka or visit the lesser known Ritigala Forest Monastery, the historic Pidurangala Rock and Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Tombs.  The natural history of Sri Lanka is intertwined into the Cultural Triangle and is best explored on private safaris led by Ayu in the Wilds Naturalists to understand the behavioural patterns of matriarchal Elephant herds or spot endemic birds in Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Biosphere Reserve. The RAMSAR Wetland of Wilpattu with its leopard and sloth bear is nearby.

To plan an itinerary with the Cultural Triangle

Speak with the Travel Designers of Ayu in the Wild to understand the depth of cultural experiences you require. Sometimes, its best to explore either Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa – and not both. Some highlights are more atmospheric early mornings. You can explore them by basing yourself in one hotel in either Dambulla, Sigiriya or Habarana.  Several guided village walks, wildlife safaris and local community-based interactions are nearby the Cultural Triangle and can be included into bespoke trips with Ayu in the Wild.
